63:1-Note

No one but God, can bear witness (Arabic: shahid) that Muhammad was 

the messenger of God, simply because no person witnessed this event. As clearly stated in verses

4:79 & 13:43, God suffices as witness - and anyone who testifies to confirm an event that they did 

not witness commits perjury. See also verses 3:18; 7:75. Hypocrites (Arabic: munafiq) show their 

true colours when they think they can bear witness - just to evince their allegiance and further 

their self interest - that Muhammad is God's messenger. No one can bear such witness, except 

God, and this is why God calls them liars. See verses 3:167; 4:79; 28:44; 47:30. & 2:8; 22:30.

Contrary to general belief King Offa of Mercia, middle England (775 C.E.) did not have the 

testimony (Arabic: shahada) as in verse 63:1 inscribed on his coins. Offa did not 'witness or testify' 

Muhammad's messengership but correctly stated on his coins that 'Muhammad is the messenger'. 

More importantly, the obverse of the coins read: "La ilaha ilallah", meaning that 'there is no 

authority to rank with the One God.' Whether King Offa was a muslim or not is debatable, but the 

coins would certainly have been useful to trade in southern Europe where trade with muslims was 

buoyant. The text on the coins is in Arabic and the coins are kept in the British Museum.(sig).
