85:22-Note-sig 1-The Quran is preserved and protected even by people who may not follow it or understand its profoundness. Millions of people around the world, from very young children to adults, memorise the Quran verbatim, without ever understanding the words they recite. They do this in order to 'safeguard' it, or make 'hifz': commit it to memory and afterwards are given the title 'Hafiz'. This means that the Quran is preserved word for word, even if all the printed copies were destroyed, it could be re-produced quickly. The respite mentioned in verse 86:17 is an opportunity to accept the guidance. Each Self needs time to repair the damage done and strengthen itself. See footnote to verse 6:12.
