This verb has two key meanings in the text depending on the preposition it uses (for the full set of instances of this form I verb see 4:100, 7:118, 7:134, 10:51, 15:29, 22:65, 27:82, 27:85, 38:72, 56:1, 69:15). As a rule, it means to occur, to befall. It is true (as per the Traditionalist’s claim here) that it also means to fall down. However, in this case the nearest preposition is in la. The Traditionalist wishes the reader to think that it means to fall down to him and the reason he wants this is that if he can get us to ascribe a purely physical value to the s-j-d root, he can begin to shoehorn his religion into the mind of the reader on that basis.
