(David and Goliath).

[2:249] And (Fa) when (Lammaa) Saul (Toaluutu) went forth (Fasala) with the soldiers (Bil' Junuudi) he said
(Qaala), "Indeed, GOD (Innallaha) will test you (Mub'talii-kum) with (Bi) a river (Naharin). And (Fa)
whoever (Man) drinks (Shariba) from it (Min'hu), then (Fa) he is not (Lai'sa) with me (Minni), and (Wa)
whoever (Man) does not (Lam') taste it (Yat'åm'hu), then (Fa) indeed, he (Innahu) is with me (Minnii), except
(illa) one who (Mani) scoops (Eg'tarafa) by scooping (Gur'fata) with (Bi) his hand (Yadi-hi)." But (Fa) they
drank (Sharibu') from it (Min'hu), except (illa) a few (Qaliilan) of them (Min'hum'). And (Fa) when (Lammaa)
he (Huwa) and (Wa) those who (Ellaziina) believed (Aamanu') with him (Maåhu) went beyond it (Jaawaza-
hu), they said (Qaalu'), "We have (Lanaa) no (Laa) strength (Toaqata) today (El'Yaw'ma) against (Bi) Goliath (Jaaluuta) and (Wa) his soldiers (Junuudi-hi)." Those who (Ellaziina) presumed (Yazunnuuna) that they
(Annahum) would meet GOD (Mulaaqu'llahi) said (Qaala), "How many (Kam) a (Min) small (Qaliilatin) party
(Fiatin) has defeated (Galabat') a large (Kathiirata) party (Fiatan), by (Bi) the permission of GOD (Iz'ni-llahi).
And (Wa) GOD (Ellahu) is with (Maå) those who are patient (Es'Soabiriin)."
.
📍Note-1
For the Biblical account of this test, see the Old Testament, Judges 7:1-8 . For a similar promise, see the Old Testament, Deuteronomy 20:1-4 .
.
📍Verse/Note-2
2:249 (The commander) Saul then marched along with his soldiers to face the armies of Jaloot (Goliath) and said, “Watch out! God will let you test yourselves by a stream.” In order to create discipline among his soldiers and to test their resolve, Saul commanded them, “He who will drink of it will not be of me, while he who will refrain from drinking it, except a sip out of a hand, will be of me. But except a few of them, they all drank of it. When he and the believers with him crossed the stream, the others complained, "This day we cannot cope with Goliath and his armies." But those who were convinced that they have to meet God (those who were marching forward in the cause of God) said, “How often, by God’s leave, has a small force overwhelmed a big army! God is with the steadfast.”

.
[2:250] And (Wa) when (Lammaa) they went forth (Barazu') to (Li) Goliath (Jaaluuta) and his soldiers
(Junuudi-hi), they said (Qaalu'), "Our LORD (Rabba-naa), pour (Af'rig') upon us (Ålai'naa) patience (Sob'ran)
and (Wa) reinforce (Thabbit') our foothold (Aq'daama-naa) and grant us victory (Ensur'naa) over (Ålaa) the
disbelieving (El'Kaafiriin) people (El'Qaw'mi)."
.
📍Great Dua.

.
[2:251] So (Fa) they defeated them (Hazamuu-hum) by (Bi) the permission of GOD (Iz'ni-llahi), and (Wa)
David (Daawuudu) killed (Qatala) Goliath (Jaaluuta), and (Wa) GOD (Ellahu) gave him (Aataa-hu)
sovereignty (El'Mul'ka) and Wisdom (Wal' Hik'mata) and (Wa) taught him (Ållama-hu) from what
(Mimmaa) HE willed (Yashaau). And (Wa) if not for (Law' Laa) GOD propelling (Daf'u'llahi) people
(En'Naasa) against each other (Ba'da-hum Bi Ba'din), the earth (El'Ar'du) would have been (La) corrupted
(Fasadati), but (Walaakinna) GOD (Ellaha) possesses (Zuu) favour (Fad'lin) for (Ålaa) the worlds (El'Åålamiin).
.
📍Verse/Note-1
251 So they inflicted a crushing defeat upon their opponents and David killed Goliath. Later on Allah bestowed authority and wisdom upon David and gave him knowledge based on revelation.
The moral of Saul s story is that if Allah did not check oppressive forces through others, there would be chaos.
(It is to be noted that Allah s intervention is not direct but through the agency of human
beings (22/40). In this way the checking of the oppressive forces is Allah s boon towards all people.)
.
📍Verse/Note-2
2:251 Then they routed them by God’s leave, as David (Daud, who was an officer of Saul) slew Goliath. And God gave him the kingdom and sound judgment and taught him what He willed. If God had not repelled some people by means of others, the earth would have been filled with inequity and bloody crimes. But God is the Lord of kindness to the worlds. [12:22, 22:39, 28:14].
.
📍Note-3
The Old Testament gives contradictory information on this story. According to 1 Samuel 17:4 , 50-51, it is David who kills the giant enemy named Goliath, while according to 2 Samuel 21:19 , it is Elhanan who does the killing. Biblical scholars who believe in the Bible verbatim, wish for us to believe that there were two different giants called Goliath, simultaneously. Interestingly, both stories are similar and David appears in both. Some Biblical scholars, however, accept the existence of a textual error.

[2:252] These (Til'ka) are the verses of GOD (Aayaatu-llahi) which We recite (Nat'luu-haa) to you (s) (Ålai'ka)
in truth (📍45:6) (Bil' Haqqi). For (Wa) indeed, you (Innaka) are one of (Lamina) the messengers (El'Mur'saliin).
.
📍Verse/Note:
2:252 These are God’s revelations that We recite to you in absolute truth. And you (O Muhammad) are certainly one of the Messengers.

(Many Messengers / One Message).
(+See 2:285).
.
[2:253] These (Til'ka) messengers (Er'Rusulu); We favoured (Faddol'naa) some of them (Ba'do-hum) over
(Ålaa) others (Ba'din). Among them (Min'hum) is one to whom (Man) GOD spoke (Kallama-llahu), and (Wa)
HE raised (Rafaå) some of them (Ba'dohum) in degrees (Darajaat'). And (Wa) We gave (Aatai'naa) Jesus
(Eesa), the son (Eb'na) of Mary (Mar'yama), proofs (El'Bayyinaati) and supported him (Ayyad'naa-hu) with
(Bi) the Holy Spirit (2:87) (Ruuhil' Qudusi). And (Wa) if (Law') GOD had willed (Shaa'a-llahu), those (Ellaziina)
after them (Min Ba'di-him) would not (Maa) have fought each other (Eq'tatala) after (Min Ba'di) what (Maa)
had come to them (Jaa'at'humu) of proofs (El'Bayyinaatu), but (Walaakini) they differed (Ekh'talafu'), and (Fa)
among them (Min'hum) were those who (Man') believed (Aamana), and (Wa) among them (Min'hum) were
those who (Man) disbelieved (Kafara). And (Wa) if (Law') GOD had willed (Shaa'a-llahu), they would not
(Maa) have fought each other (Eq'tatalu'), but (Walaakinna) GOD (Ellaha) does (Yaf'ålu) what (Maa) HE
intends (Yuriid).
.
📍Verse/Note-1
2:253 (All Messengers were one in purpose. They were assigned different strategies suitable to their times, locations and people.) We caused some of those Messengers to excel others. God spoke to some of them. Others He raised in degrees of high honor. Jesus son of Mary was one of those Messengers whom We gave clear signs of truth and helped him with Ruh-il Qudus. If God had so willed, the later generations would not have fought among themselves after clear evidence of the truth had come to them. But they chose to differ, some believed and others disbelieved. Yet, if God had so willed, they would not have fought each other. But God does everything according to His laws.
.
All Messengers were one in purpose
2:136, 2:285. God did not create human beings like programmed robots. He endowed men and women with free will, and never ordained compulsion in religion 2:256. God makes His laws in the World of Command as He wills, and implements them in the World of Creation 7:54. And He never changes His laws. 6:15, 6:34, 7:54, 10:64,
17:77, 30:30, 33:62, 35:43, 48:23. Ruh-il Qudus = Ruh-ul Qudus = The Noble Revelation = Gabriel 2:87, 5:110, 16:102.
.
📍Verse/Note-2
253 No distinction is made amongst the Rusul mentioned in the Quran so far as their
Nubuwwat is concerned (2/285). However, they are differentiated from each other by virtue of their
spheres of activity. To some Allah spoke directly (e.g. Moses 4/164, 7/143-144 and 42/51) and
some were elevated above others in certain respects, among them is Jesus, son of Mary. To him,
We had given revelation (Ruhul-Qudus) in an authentic form which was corroborated by reason.
This gave him great strength and confidence (2/87).
If it had been Allah s will to create human beings without freedom of the will, then the
followers of various Rusul would not have differed amongst themselves or waged wars against each
other after they had received clear guidance through their Anbia. They differed and split into two
classes: one who accepted Divine Laws and others who rejected them. Mark again! If Allah had not
bestowed freedom of the will upon human beings they would not have differed or waged wars
amongst themselves. This is also His Law and Allah does whatever He wills.
