[2:243] Have you not (Alam') considered (Tara ilaa) those who (Ellaziina) went out (Kharaju') of (Min) their
homes (Diyaari-him') while (Wa) they (Hum') were thousands (Uluufun), being cautious (Hazara) of death
(El'Maw'ti) and (Fa) GOD (Ellahu) said (Qaala) to them (Lahumu), "Die (Muutu')," and then (Thumma) HE
revived them (Ah'yaa-hum')? Indeed, GOD (Innallaha) possesses (Lazuu) favour (Fad'lin) for (Ålaa) mankind
(En'Naasi), but (Walaakinna) most (Ak'thara) of the people (En'Naasi) are not (Laa) thankful (Yash'kuruun).
.
📍Verse/Note-1
243 It was mentioned earlier (2/216-218) that you will have to confront mighty forces which
stand in the way of the establishment of the Divine Order. To confront external problems
successfully it is necessary that domestic conditions should be conducive to peace. For this reason,
rules relating to the organisation of family life were given (2/221-242). Now let us return to the
original subject, Have you pondered the case of those who though many thousands in number, left
their homes and ran away when they were confronted by the enemy. Because they were afraid of
death, so they were overtaken by it. This happened because they forgot what the secret of life is:
only he lives who is not afraid of death (2/94) and one who runs away from death, is overtaken by
it. When they understood this secret and provided the evidence by confronting the enemy, they
were infused with new life. This is the basic Law according to which superiority is given to some
people but most of them do not appreciate and do not feel grateful.(pz).
.
📍Verse/Note-2
2:243 (The Ideal Society that you must strive to establish shall have sound socio-economic fabric and Rule of law. That would enable you to thwart aggression from any quarters.) You would not then, behave cowardly like those who were thousands in numbers, but when challenged by the enemy, they ran in droves leaving their homes behind. They feared death. Then they realized that the Divine law of mortality is inescapable, hence the fear of death is vain. Soon, they stood up on their feet and defeated the enemy. They lived again. God’s Guidance is a bounty to mankind but most people do not appreciate this fact.

📍Note-1
Fight only in self-defense, and against oppression since God does not love aggressors. 2:190.
.
📍Note-2
The Quran invites people to peace (2:208). Thus, the universal greeting salam or salamun alaikum continuously invites people to peace (4:94). War is permitted only in self-defense. For the principles of war, see 60:7 and 9:5.

.
📍Verse/Note-1
2:246 (Sustained commitment to the Divine Order with wealth and person is not an easy undertaking.) After the times of Moses, some leaders of the Israelites promised their Prophet (Samuel), “If you appoint a king for us, we will fight in the cause of God.” The Prophet said, “Is it your intention to refrain from fighting if it was decreed to you?” They said, “Why should we not fight in the cause of God when we have been driven out of our homes with our children?” Yet when fighting was ordained for them, they turned away all but a few. God is Aware of the wrongdoers.

The same event is told in more detail in the Old Testament, 1 Samuel 8:1-18 ; 9:1.
